PERSPECTIVES

Today, it is very difficult to forecast what is next for Myanmar. The political and economic changes of the last few years are quite encouraging.

Nevertheless, the half-civilian government is still confronted with numerous challenges. Among them, the central question of managing diversity. First of all, the government has to negotiate peace with the armed groups that have been fighting for their political rights and against the Army for more than 50 years. It should answer the requests from the minorities that signed ceasefire agreements with them, on a long term perspective. Eventually, the government has to cope with the emergence of extremist religious and nationalistic tendencies; used for political purposes. In short, the future leaders of the country will have to start building a democratic Myanmar, where the ethnic and religious groups may live together in unity, without abandoning their specificities. The Burmese population hopes the best will come from this election, even if some of them are ready to face the worse. Will the limited change continue on its way? Will there be new perspectives for everyone ?
